To be fair about my paralyzed reaction to this sort of contact, I had no idea how to deal with boys, despite being about 13 and having almost only male friends. Up until that year (when Gareth noticed I was female), I was...um... I had a singular style, and never had to think about boys beyond how much I enjoyed hanging out with them and playing Ren and Stimpy on Sega Genesis.
In order to draw this comic, I did a little research into bottle-base sidewalks. They were made to illuminate the basements below the city buildings, because NYC is so crammed that it's mostly built up and down. Turns out, there are a TON in downtown Manhattan, where I was a kid. They exist in other cities too, but they aren't that common, anymore. What's really sad is that a lot of them are wearing away-- the prisms busting out and breaking. But look: aren't they fascinatingly beautiful? |

Hello melty Melburnians.
I am in need (even more so thanks to our current weather) of a tasteful, retractable awning for my balcony. I wish to a. shade my windows b. protect my lovely plants and c. make the balcony more enjoyable in icky sun.
I have of course googled and yellow pages-ed, however I can't find an indication of cost online and would rather have an idea before I get anyone in to do quotes,.
So, for an area of approx. 1.5 x 3Ms on a balcony in Brunswick, does anyone know what sort of cash I'm looking at? Any advice on good or bad companies welcomed.

3rd day.
cant recall doing anything else that day with out photo evidence, so I think D went for an early morning swim, and we made salads and generally just watched out over the beach from the balcony. at 12:30 we went on a whale tour (one of the last of the season)
going past the small township of cowan cowan on the way north of moreton for whale watching

| 3 Pages: Book 2 is OVER! |

So, Chapter 10 and Book 2 of OoT both end with this update; this comic is in theory two-thirds done, now. Goodness goodness goodness.
The handsome Rice Boy Wiki went up recently! A couple of folks have already laid down an infrastructure and started putting a bunch of information there. I think I'll replace the World page with a link straight to this wiki. The goal is to have a focal point for world-internal information that I don't have to spend a lot of time maintaining myself. So if this is an interesting thing, feel free to have a look and modify stuff.
Right now I'm reading Dune by Frank Herbert for the first time (for a lovely reading group), and LOVING IT. I tried it a couple of times years ago, but never got through the dense bits near the start. It is a very visual book, I think, so I've drawn two illustrations and hope to do more from later in the book. OK! Will talk to you on Wednesday! |

Well, I used a lot of the suggestions that came my way from that post the other day! I was pretty pleased with the turnout of readers for that question, I must admit. I guess it's because you hear a lot that people don't give a darn about history in this country, if depressing yearly polls from the Dominion Institute mean anything, but it's clearly not the case among my livejournal followers. You guys are great!
I had to do a general sweep that involved a good range of places, professions, backgrounds and time periods, so you know, not everyone's favorite author is going to be in there but I sure did like the range in suggestions. Looking at it now I wish I had someone from the NWT (not one! for shame) and New Brunswick. Stompin Tom is from New Brunswick but he's also sort of from everywhere. I could have put the Irvings in there, I think they control history in NB as well as anything else.
I was all crazed out with strep throat while I did this, but listening to Radiolab shows and a burning passion for Canada I guess(?) kept me going. You can find the image in today's National Post, along with an article about the Historica/Dominion merger! Interesting stuff.

Сегодня под вечер наконец поставила себе "Говорилку". Одна из моих любимейших программ для прослушивания книг, что удобно во время какой-то работы за компьютером. До последнего боялась, что под Висту не пойдет ни сама программа, ни речевой движок Digalo. Но в итоге все получилось нормально. Можно продолжить бесконечные чтения книг, не отрываясь при этом от работы за компьютером. Более того, заставлять это все богатство работать, только чтобы читать глазами с монитора — преступление. Да и глаза целее будут.
Пару слов хочется сказать о речевом движке "Николай". Это истинно мужской голос, скрипучий, тяжелый. Сначала непривычно, но потом уже скрипучести не замечаешь. Кстати, под него можно включить на небольшой громкости ненавязчивую музыку. Со временем голос кажется очень уютным. Представляет собой нарезки живого голоса, которые по слогам складываются в слова. Движок позволяет менять скорость, высоту и интонацию произношения. Правильное произношение тех или иных слов регулируется в пользовательском словаре "Говорилки". Так же в новой версии программы можно очень легко включать и выключать словари произношения.
Чтобы откорректировать незнакомое словарям слово (например, какое-то название из фантастического рассказа), нужно его выделить и выбрать "Словарь...". В появившемся окне будет указан верхней строчкой тот словарь, в который будет вноситься произношение слова. Во второй строке "Текст" написано нужное для корректирования слово так, как оно должно встречаться в тексте, чтобы программа могла его опознать и прочитать правильно. Нижней строчкой "Читать как" повторяется слово, но только с корректирующими символами в нем. Вот эти символы:
"<" — означает, что ударение должно падать в слове на тот слог, который стоит слева от этого знака.
">" — означает, что ударение должно падать в слове на тот слог, который стоит справа от этого знака.
"-" — вставив знак между слогами слово немного прерывается в этом месте. Чем больше знаков, тем больше перерыв.
"(" и ")" — позволяют делать разрывы в произношении короткими и более ощутимыми.
"?" — слово произносится в вопросительной интонации.
"!" — слово произносится в восклицательной интонации.
Дополнительные гласные также позволяют менять произношение.
Чтобы работать с именами собственными вам необходимо в графе "Текст" перед словом поставить знак "$". Это будет означать, что изменения касаются только слова, начинающегося с заглавной буквы. Т.е. "наташа" будет читаться без изменений, а "Наташа" уже так, как вы укажете.
Чтобы работать с корнями слов, в графе "Текст" нужно указать его корень и после поставить "*". Тогда, если ударение падает на корень, то окончания программа поставит самостоятельно. Т.е. если в слове "$Наташ*" в графе "Читать как" поставить ударением на первый слог, то все окончания подставляются автоматически. Слово будет читаться с ударением на первый слог с любым окончанием после звездочки.
